Jason is the pet dog of Roland Kincaid (Ken Sagoes). He plays a significant part in the dream sequences, and is also one of the few animal characters to appear in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies.

The name of the dog is clearly a nod to Jason Voorhees (the villain of the rival "Friday the 13th" slasher series).
